Transom is committed to testing new tools for public radio producers. To that end, our TOOLS editor Jeff Towne has reviewed a lot of the new small digital recorders. They’re getting better. In fact, of the Sony PCM-D50, Jeff says, “Among all the small handheld flash recorders, the Sony D50 certainly is near the front of the pack. It does most things right, with only a few minor problems, and no tragic flaws.” So, it’s not quite perfect, but if you’re in the market, you should check out this review.

    wind noise

For anyone who doesn't want to spend an additional fifty dollars on the wind screen, I have a solution. I have found that if you cut the end off of panty hose (where your toes go) and slip it over the mics of the sony pcm-d50, you will fairly significantly cut wind noise and pops. Two over top of each other works best. If you have a situation outside with a significant amount of wind (not a hurricane), you can buy a fur boa from Michaels and very carefully glue it to the panty hose. I thought this might help some one. Just the panty hose works in most situations. The fur does very slightly cut the high end, but cuts out stronger wind.
